Two things in life you hope for. One is, as a kid, you hope you don’t have a December 25th birthday because that is Christmas. The other is, as a parent, you don’t have to bury a child. Both of these things happened to the Hunter Family. Nixon “Wildcard” Hunter was born December 25 2012, but just eight months later Stephanie and Rich Hunter would be saying goodbye to their son, Nixon, in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at CHOC. Nixon’s middle name came shortly after Stephanie got pregnant. They came up with a middle name for Nixon that was completely unique: “Wildcard”. Rich said “We thought it'd be just a fun name for him to have, because most people hate their middle names." The causes of Nixon’s passing were many. Nixon’s parents liked to say, “I think we got the outside right, we just couldn’t get the inside to work together correctly." However, every cloud has a silver lining and that was the formation of “Wildcard Army”. One of Nixon’s many health issues was a severe to profound hearing loss in both ears. Stephanie and Rich, Nixon’s mom and dad, are members of the Orange Elks. When the Elks heard about Nixon, our members stepped in with prayers, and an idea to get involved. One of the best characteristics of an Elk is “Generosity.” The Huntington Beach and Orange Elks donated toward Nixon’s medical expenses in his short time with us.

This year, the Orange Elks will get involved with Stephanie and Rich’s Easter Basket Drive. This is the 3rd annual Easter Basket Drive. The main goal is to provide a basket to as many children that will be in CHOC during Easter. The Orange Elks raised over $1,100.00 to help provide forty baskets (20 for boys and 20 for girls) which included a $10 gift card, crayons, coloring books, Playskool Learning books, puzzles, playing cards, Bubble fun, Goofey Sun glasses, Glow Sticks, Barbie Dolls and Hot Wheels. Twenty-two Elks and their spouses helped pack the baskets. Roughly 550 baskets are going to be distributed.

When the Elks find out about events like these, we get involved, and the saying “Elks Care and Elks Share” makes you proud that you are an Elk!
