The Orange Elks are involved with many groups in our city. Our Drug Awareness Chairman Mike Cash, through our involvement with the GRIP (Gang Reduction Intervention Partnership) received three requests. One from a counselor at La Veta Elementary School about a family in OUSD (Orange Unified School District) that has fallen on very hard times. The father was working but was forced to take time off due to medical issues. Mother is not working right now to care for the father who was sadly placed on hospice. They have 3 boys and due to the financial and emotional burden of the situation, they do not have the means to provide for the kids at Christmas.
The second request from a counselor at Orange HS about one of their students that was hit by a car on Collins Ave. while riding his bike. The bike was destroyed and he was hospitalized in critical condition. He has recovered and has been cleared to ride a bike again and he is being raised by a single mother.
The third request came in from the principal of Nohl Canyon Elementary for two brothers being raised by their single mother and grandmother who wanted bikes for Christmas.
The lodge stepped in to purchase the bikes for these keds. The Tuesday night meal deal team of Steve Weaver and Jeff Kohrs and our club manager Cindy Corrales donated the money to purchase the bmx bikes, a mountain bike, lights, locks and helmets. The Christmas Basket Program stepped in and donated a Christmas Food Basket for each of the families. For each new bikes lights, locks and helmets were included. This is how the Orange Lodge members working together make it happen!
As our Leading Knight reminds us each month, "Charity, is the cornerstone of every Elk structure, the highest virtue of every Elk creed. The daily gifts we bestow increase our own riches. The help we extend to those in need is added to our own strength. The witchery of wealth is not in having, but in sharing. The real benefactors of mankind count their store in what is given, not in what is saved."
