Youth Appreciation Night

The Orange Elks celebrate National Youth Week with our annual Youth Appreciation Night program to honor the youth of our community by showcasing the many programs the Lodge has for our young people.

Our volunteer kitchen crew prepared more than 150 burgers/cheeseburgers. cooked lbs. and lbs. of chicken strips and fries for our guests and had cookies for dessert.

Orange P D K-9 officer Danto stopped by to say Goodbye! Danto, who has attended several Youth Night programs is retiring after five years of dedicated service to the city of Orange.

E R Janine Strom welcomed our award winners, their parents, guests, and lodge members. She gave a thumb nail of all the youth activities that the lodge does during the Elk year.

Dan Slater, Mayor of Orange, and an Orange Elk member, presented and read a Youth Week Appreciation Proclamation.
Dan gave his 6 keys to success to the audience. Two key points were ?Listen to your parents and teachers and do the right thing?.

Our guest speaker was Orange Police Chief and Orange Elks member Dan Adams. Dan was impressed by the quality of participation of the young people and the generosity of the Orange Elks toward our youth programs. Dan challenged the young people to ?Leave an impression as impressions last forever? and be a positive influence because being positive is contagious?.

J C mentioned our lodges Dictionary Program. On the third Wednesday of October, we delivered a dictionary to every third grader in the Orange Unified School District.  This is the student?s own dictionary. In seventeen years, we have delivered over thirty-three thousand dictionaries to the third graders.

Presenting the awards were Miss Orange Madeleine Chocholaty and Elroy T. Elk. Elroy is the face of our Orange Lodge and our mascot for all our youth activities.

Hoop Shoot Chairmen Steve Baez mentioned the winners in boys and girls Hoop Shoot and Soccer Shoot. The winners received a trophy and a Hoop Shoot basketball or Soccer Ball.

Drug Awareness Chairman, Mike Cash introduced the members of the video team from Cerro Villa Middle School. Their video won in the District and State and is waiting for the results from the National Contest. The past teams from Cerro Villa have won this competition several times in the middle school division. The lodge presented the video team with a check for $700 to purchase video equipment. In the past the team have used cell phones to make their videos.

Mike presented three Youth Presidential Volunteer Service Awards. This awards a young person who donates 250 hours of service to their community. The Youth Presidential Volunteer Service Award is a premier volunteer award. The award is presented through the office of the President of the United States and the Elks Drug Awareness Program. The award encourages you to look around, be inspired and take positive action that changes the world. The Elks Drug Awareness Program presents the lifetime YPVSA to a youth who has volunteered 100 or more hours over their lifetime. To date, more than 5,000 volunteers nationwide have been recognized for their service.
Receiving the award were Teagan Burgueno, Sylvia Jones and Evanee Hernandez.

Chris Michaelis, Americanism Chairman, stated this year the essay theme was ?What is your American Dream?? Our Americanism program helps to promote Americanism and each of our winners received a $50 Scholarship and a Certificate of Appreciation. The award winners were Avery Wren Violatano, Evelynn Nguyen, Anderson Jeng, Angelina Schaad, Isabella Cranados, Avery Norred, Lourdes Segul Adamo, Myla Goodjoin, Malana Pelaski, Vanessa Silva, Wyatt Kani and Nathan Lew.

Our lodge Scouting Chairmen, Joe Medina gave a brief update on our Girl Scout, Scouts BSA (Boy Scouts) and Cub Scout 1475 Troops. Over the years our troops have helped the lodge with dinners and flag presentations. Our Scouts BSA (Boy Scouts) have produced 15 Eagle Scouts since 2006.
Theresa Beach and Joe showed several awards the troops earned.

Our Scholarship Chairmen Lynda Einstein introduced seven outstanding high school seniors. They are Morgan McGinnus, Michelle Cruz Castillo, Simone Bilodeau, Litzy Gomez, Helena Granieri, Katelyn Martinez and Roman McGinnus.
The Orange Elks awarded $5,000 in scholarship awards.  This year each of our seven had their bio read. This included their extracurricular activities, community service, work experience, grade point average, where they are headed to college and their major.  In addition to being one of our lodge?s winners, Simone Bilodeau received District and National level awards. Roman Umnas received a State level award.

J C summed up the evening, ?What an amazing night celebrating our youth?! It was nice to hear our Mayor, Dan Slater and his support of our youth and our city, Chief Dan Adams and his passion for our youth and all the great advice. Thanks to all our volunteers that made this night happen.
