Next was Don Westerfield presenting the Veterans Night Program that was titled Veterans & Music Through the Years. The program included many songs associated with the various conflict our veterans have been involved in. When the song "We Gotta Get Out of This Place" played our Viet Nam Veterans immediately recognized it.
For the last fifteen years, our Veterans Committee and Chairmen Brian and Stephanie Fitzpatrick have selected and given out a Local Heroes Scholarship of $1,475 to a veteran. Over $22,000 dollars has gone to those individuals to help acquire books, materials, in one case a computer to help them further their studies and earn a degree in their major. Because of the pandemic we were not able recognize the Local Heroes Scholarship winner last year. The 2020 winner is U S Army veteran Samuel Johnson and the 2021 winner is U S Army veteran Tony Stambuk. Sam is attending Masters University working toward a Theology degree. Tony Stambuk is going to Orange Coast College and majoring in psychology. Both men reside at the Orange County Rescue Mission (OCRM).
Earlier this year our lodge selected the OCRM to receive is receiving the $2,500 Freedom Grants. The OCRM is to help the men, women and children who have become homeless and need help.
Each year our program ends with the singing of “God Bless the USA” by Lee Greenwood.
“As long as there is a Vet, the Orange Elks will never forget”.

L – R Fernando Arroya (OCRM),  Brian Fitzpatrick Jamie Nelson (OCRM),   Tony, Sam and Stephanie Fitzpatrick
