The annual Orange County Stand Down was held at the Tustin Marine Base.

What is a Stand Down?  The definition provided by the Veterans Village of San Diego: "In times of war, exhausted combat units requiring time to rest and recover were removed from the battlefields to a place of relative security and safety. Today, Stand Down refers to a community-based intervention program designed to help the nation's estimated 200,000 homeless veterans "combat" life on the streets."

The Stand Down is a three day event. A quote from Veterans First who organized the event is “Providing services to the men and women whose sacrifices defending our freedom have left them in need”. Breakfast, lunch and dinner was served. In addition to a hot meal, many services are available: medical, dental and vision exams, mental health and substance abuse counseling, legal assistance, Veterans and Social Security benefits, showers, haircuts, clothing and hygiene kits, education aid, housing and employment services, children's services, chiropractic, acupuncture, massage therapy and podiatry services.

On Saturday, over 60 members from the Elks Lodges in Huntington Beach, Fullerton and Orange Elks Lodges prepared and served over 300 meals. Saturday morning the breakfast was scrambled eggs, hash brown potatoes, sausage, coffee and orange juice.

“As long as there is a Vet, the Elks will never forget"!

The breakfast!
